Inside North Wilkesboro Speedway's ORIGINAL Buildings: Full History Tour Before The Renovation!
For YEARS I have wondered what the inside of the abandoned NASCAR track North Wilkesboro Speedway's buildings looked like. There were countless drone videos and images over the years showing the track surface, grandstands, etc. I have NEVER seen the inside of the original control tower, press boxes, or Winston suites. We showcase all of that once and for all with first hand history from Ronald Queen (who basically grew up at the track). We check out the infield buildings, backstretch grandstands, concession stands, everything you have ever wanted to see!
Huge thanks to SMI for enabling us to make this video!!

North Wilkesboro feels like the Field Of Dreams of Racing. An amazing facility that exists in a location that is uncommon and doesn't seem like it's quite real. I feel like I would be metaphorically pinching myself over and over asking myself if I was really there. "Is this heaven? No, it's North Wilkesboro." (I think that would make a good T-shirt idea)

Hey guys, thanks so much for giving us an in-depth look at these 2 awesome historical NASCAR venues & tracks (Rockingham & N. Wilkesboro). They’re literally a time capsule of NASCAR’s glory days and a very good status reference in the tragic event that they’re completely renovated beyond recognition or possibly even gutted for future mid-level NASCAR racing or even trucks/Xfinity down the road. These tracks have so much genuine historical importance and significance, it seems such a sad waste that today’s NASCAR executives haven’t spent the money or even taken a moment to invest in it’s really cool history. It’s a shame they only focus on “forward,” but there are MILLIONS of us old-timers that refuse to allow them to disrespect their glorious “checkered” past. I collect historically important NASCAR memorabilia, and I know I’m not alone. We can NEVER forget where the sport came from if we’re ever going to support where it’s going! Thanks again for the great content. It’s really appreciated.

Mitchel & Logan, I want to thank you both again for sharing these videos. I was 30 in 1996 when the last Cup race was run at NWilks. I used to watch Cup races on TBS, TNT, TNN & Speed back in the day. When Ronnie mentioned Bob Jenkins & Benny Parson doing the play-by-play calls from that room, I immediately heard their voices & could see the Cup cars running a race. Keep up the great content folks. Take care & stay safe. Cheers from BC🇨🇦

I'm a history fanatic and these videos are just amazing!! Getting me all kinds of nostalgic.. I was 10 when Jeff won that last race at North Wilkesboro and been a #24/HMS fan my whole life..

  • ZommerGames

For as many years as the track has been left "vacant," its pretty amazing to see how good of shape some of the buildings are in. It's definitely sad to see some of the structures in the condition that they are, but I'm really excited to see what they do with the facility! Would love to see some races there someday. Not to mention (this might be a long shot) but would love to see a Cup race there in the future!

You could hear Barney with MRN absolutely everywhere on a Sunday back then. I was 15 for the last race and honestly expected Bill Elliot or Dale to win it. Thankful they're breathing life back into it. When I think of NASCAR, those are the days my mind goes to.

I really hope some of the original buildings are preserved to what they are now to showcase the history for people to enjoy as a attraction to the track. Keep it non cookie cutter like the rest of the tracks have become. Keep it a time capsule as much as you can within reason.

I have soooo many memories of going to this track when I was a kid.. My parents, other family members and my best friend would usually leave Friday and go camp for the weekend. Ive been to a lot or races growing up and throughout my years but I can say 100% without a doubt the most fun I/we ever had was at North Wilkesboro.. after the race was over on Sunday I couldnt wait for that gate to open so we could run down on the track and to the infield to try and get pictures and autographs... The first time I ever saw/got to meet Richard Petty was there.. He was setting in the covered garage there in the infield in a metal fold out chair signing autographs... I was probably like 10-12 years old and its a vivid memory I will NEVER forget... I have a ton of old pictures that we took there, now I need to try to find and dig them out lol. Thank you for doing things like you are!

When North Wilkesboro closed, I was 25 years old and was livid about them closing down this track. There were so many better choices to take away dates or have a few more tracks with one date to keep this track operating. They were too worried about fair weather markets and the money and basically crapped on the faithful. I'm glad the track is coming along.

    • Dan Daniels
      Dan Daniels

I agree totally I live near Newton NC where Dale Sr dealership is so going to the NW races was a fun easy trip to watch some great races. First one ever was the race that made me fall in love with Dale Sr aggressive racing style and I was his fan till the end and still am. I posted above so won't post my whole Dale Sr experience again but it was awesome that day I 1989 until Ricky rudd spun he and Dale out and Geoff Bodine went on to win the race. But when Bruton Smith I believe bought Wilkesboro I knew it wasn't good.i new it was going to be the end because he owned Charlotte motor speedway and Atlanta I think too and want more 1/2 mile tracks and needed the dates to do so. It crushed alot of southeast fans that loved Wilkesboro racetrack racing. Devastated north Wilkesboro to lose there races and track like that.Bruton Smith became a hated man back in the late 80's and 90's.. So don't no the whole story about it reopening and what there going to ha e there again but it's great to hear anyways.

I was four years old when Jeff Gordon won the final Cup race. I don’t personally remember it but I went back and watched it on IRglo and it was a wonderful race. Many drivers and broadcasters were very open about how upset they were that it was being taken off the schedule.

This is so cool! I went to the 1991 fall race. I almost got to see Mr. September himself Harry Grant try to win 5 races in a row. He almost did it but his brakes started fading at the end and Dale Sr. won the race. Still was a cool moment. Keep up the great work with the historical videos.

  • monnieweb

I really love what you two are doing with this history stuff. I grew up in racing with my friends. We raced at many different tracks in the southeast. Back then I didn’t realize the historical significance of all the tracks we raced. But today looking back it seems to mean so much to me to have been around those places and to be in the presence of those that have become my greatest hero’s. It was great to see Wilkes Speedway, it brought back many memories. I was born and raised in Taylorsville, still live here, right between Wilkes Speedway and Hickory Speedway and I love seeing young folks taking huge interest in their history. Keep up the great work and by all means, take good care of that awesome young lady you have by your side. So much respect to you both. Monnie. P.S. you should come to Taylorsville and interview the many racing legions that are still here. Rex White lives just down the road from me, Harry Gant is still our local hero. And there are many more.

    • monnieweb

@Stapleton42 I’ve talked with Harry several times. I used to see him around town some but haven’t in recent years. He’s actually a cousin to my Brother in law and my Dad and uncles used to race him back in the days. Harry always had the expensive and fastest cars. :-) He’s a supper nice guy and if you can contact him I’m sure he’d love to talk to you. I can tell you where he lives, you might could just drop by for a visit. He’s just a home town guy here and acts as humble as anyone.

I was at the last Winston Cup race here. Being from Daytona, it was crazy how small the track was compared to DIS. Still the only short track I have ever been to. Stopped by a few weeks ago when visiting family in Statesville and was so nice to see work being done.

Yeah Mitchell, I turned 50 back in ‘96 and my oldest son told me I had officially achieved old man status. Wasn’t much into the NASCAR racing but enjoyed the local dirt tracks. My main interest was NHRA until they got so commercial it became hard to watch. Got rid of satellite tv and got into watching IRglo and people like you and Logan. Well done, you two! Loved the video. Been there back in 2005 and looked around, I think the gentlemen you toured with, I was shown around by his uncle back in 2005. What a cool experience. I wish NASCAR would understand that there is a segment of fans (late 40 yr old's to people in their 70's and 80's) that would love the old school vibe and do not need luxury suites and high dollar amenities. People would pay a fortune to see a NASCAR race again at the speedway and be able to just hang out in one of the old suites. NASCAR is clueless nowadays. Cheers to seeing another NASCAR event at North Wilkesboro!!!

I was 28 when the last race was run there. Hand painted signs would be awesome. I am so pumped that NASCAR is going back. Years ago I spoke to Buddy Baker and Dave Moody on the NASCAR program through Sirius Satellite about North Wilkesboro and Rockingham coming back. They both at separate times said there was no way. I grew up watching races at those tracks.I can still remember watching NASCAR race at the Riverside Road Course here in California. I can't wait to see the first race. I heard its also going to be a Dirt Track at first which is amazing to me because I love dirt track racing. Not too long ago Dale Jr had that track scanned for the video game. He and a bunch of people went out and cut all the weeds down that were actually growing out of the track surface. Even Dale said it was to far gone. Thank you for doing this video before all the changes'

Love the history in this video. It’s so awesome to see Barry Braun help bring life back to North Wilkesboro. He’s done awesome work for dirt racing across the country and has developed quite the relationship with SMI. Awesome job on the video. Keep up the good work. Watching from Texas!
